RT-PCR
A molecular test for the detection of genetic material of COVID-19 virus by replicating copies of specific viral RNA for analysis, obtained from nasal and/or oral swabs. It is considered as the “gold standard” for diagnosing COVID-19 infection in both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals due to its higher sensitivity and accuracy, where results usually take around 12-24 hours from the collection of sample.
ANTIBODY
Used to qualitatively detect the antibodies (IgG and IgM) of COVID-19 virus present in human blood. IgG and IgM antibodies are naturally produced by the immune system against the virus, indicating a recent or prior infection. It is highly reliable, where results are obtained quickly in short time.
ANTIGEN
A diagnostic test for current COVID-19 infection, especially in symptomatic individuals, which detects the viral proteins present in nasal and throat swabs. It is relatively simple and fast procedure (usually takes 15-30 minutes for a result), but less sensitive than RT-PCR testing as it requires high viral load to detect the virus.
